Obtaining a Business License
Do I need a business license?
A business license is required for any business activity. "Business" means and includes all trades, occupations, professions, or activities engaged in within the County, carried on for the purpose of gain or economic profit. Note: A business license from Utah County IS NOT the same as approval from other required agencies and organizations such as: Utah County Health Department, Department of Commerce, Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing, Internal Revenue Service, or others.

Schedule Inspections
Your business license will be issued once all the above steps have been completed, your application reviewed and approved, and inspections approved. The license will need to be renewed every year in July. If your business requires a BCI (Bureau of Criminal Investigation) check, it will also need to be renewed.
Exemptions
Some non-profit, charitable, governmental, and home occupations may be exempt from needing a Utah County business license.

A home occupation is conducted entirely within a residential dwelling, or its accessory structures, that is typically small in scale and secondary to the residential use of the property. They should be conducted with little to no impact on the neighbors. The average person should be able to pass by and not know there is a business in the home, other than a business sign. Examples of Home Occupations include: at-home salons, freelance services, tutoring, crafts and handmade goods, home-based bakeries, etc.

Renewals
All licenses are issued for one year commencing July 1st expiring June 30th of the following year. A courtesy reminder renewal notice is mailed in June. Business licenses can be renewed by completing an application for a license renewal and returning it, along with the proper fees, to the Business License Division.
Inspections
Each business is required to pass an inspection prior to opening and before a business license will be issued. If you are a new business and would like to schedule an inspection to receive your business license, contact the Business Licensing Official (kevins@utahcounty.gov)
An annual inspection is required to maintain a current business license. Utah County Community Development will contact business owner to schedule the annual inspection.
Closures
If your business is closing or has already closed, please inform the Business Licensing Official (kevins@utahcounty.gov) and the County Assessor (burtg@utahcounty.gov).

Alcohol Licensing
To obtain an alcohol license in unincorporated Utah County, apply with the Utah State Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services (DABS). Retail licenses, permits, and some wholesale licenses require local consent from the Utah County Commission.
